Grotte di Catullo

Live like the Romans

Right in Sirmione, not far from our Hotel Orione is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites at Lake Garda - the Catullus’ Grottos, otherwise known as Grotte di Catullo.

These Roman era buildings, incorrectly described as grottos, comprise a majestic Roman villa and the connected thermal baths. The ancient Romans knew all about the healing effect of the thermal waters in Sirmione. This was the reason why they settled at the upper section in particular at this area, which is still a unique little place today.

According to legend, Roman poet Gaius Valerius Catullus, who devoted a few verses to the contemplative town of Sirmione, is said to have stayed in this fantastic retreat.

In actual fact the building was only constructed after his death, nonetheless he is still the prominent eponym.

Treasures of a time past

Be amazed by the luxuriousness and splendour of ancient Rome. In the museum, which is right in the building, relics and objects from times long past give an account of this advanced civilisation. There is also a prehistoric and a medieval museum here. Monitors and 3D animations show the life of the Romans and the many interactive offers inspire all the family.

Without a doubt, these exciting remains are among the most impressive sights in the region and they are unique in their form and location at the end of the promontory of Sirmione. The Grotte di Catullo ruins, directly at Lake Garda are more than worth a visit.
